A „refugee authority“ had already been set up at the end of 1945, just a few months after the end of World War II.
A statistic from 1948 relates that almost 2,000 refugees and expelled persons lived in Unna at that time. They therefore made up 8% of Unna residents. Community-based support was established that helped expelled persons and refugees to find support.
Because of the extreme lack of living quarters in Unna and surrounding towns new arrivals could almost never be granted their own accommodation. Up until the 1950s the old-established residents and refugee families were forced to share apartments with up to four further families.
