In 1982 a small group of Turkish citizens in Unna founded the „Türkisch Islamische Gemeinde zu Unna e. V.“.
The first rooms of the association, also including a prayer room, were located in a former petrol station in Hansastraße.
The community rapidly became popular and the association rooms soon had insufficient space. Accommodation was once again sought for the association and community.
A former commercial building in Höingstraße was purchased in summer 1990 and a temporary mosque was then set up at this location. The simpleness of the building didn’t hint that it enclosed a mosque.
10 years later in 2000, the decision was taken to carry out extensive conversion work on the building – the dome and a symbolic minaret today underline the religious importance of the building from the outside. The interior mosque space and social rooms were decorated with hand-painted tiles from Turkey and stucco work and prayer rugs were added.
